Safeguarding
Safeguarding in general practice has evolved significantly in recent years. General practice plays a vital role as a key partner within the multi-agency safeguarding system. Effective safeguarding depends on professionals and organisations working together to protect those at risk.
What is Safeguarding in General Practice?
Safeguarding in general practice means contributing to the protection of children, young people, and adults from abuse and neglect by using the specific skills, resources, and responsibilities within primary care.
This includes:
- Meeting professional safeguarding responsibilities
Ensuring all staff undertake appropriate safeguarding training and continue their professional development. - Preventing abuse and neglect
Promoting a safe environment and raising awareness to reduce risk. - Identifying concerns
Recognising signs of abuse or neglect in children and adults. - Responding appropriately
Taking timely and appropriate action, including supporting victims and survivors. - Having effective governance systems
Maintaining clear policies, procedures, and reporting processes to support safeguarding. - Working collaboratively
Partnering with other healthcare professionals, safeguarding teams, and external agencies to ensure coordinated care and protection.
